Arabesque

Have been playing with the turban.  Not sure if I got it right.  My inspiration is Ms InnyVinny (if you don’t read her then you really really should!)  She even made a short video on how to tie a Turban.  In this insane Sydney heat and humidity you would think wearing one of these would be murder but surprisingly it wasn’t.

I still don’t feel like it’s totally right but I thought I would experiment with this trend.  What new trends are you experimenting with?  I would love to know.

Style Vs Fashion

This is an age old discussion.  What is better, to be Stylish or to be Fashionable?

I think a Stylish person can be fashionable or vice versa but a Stylish person is more apt to be fashionable and Stylish than a Fashionable person is to be Stylish and Fashionable.

Let me explain.  Style is timeless, it’s the Chanel handbag, the pearl necklace, the trench coat, the items in your wardrobe that stand the test of you time.  You can wear them now or 10 years from now and you will still look stylish.   Fashion is seasonal, it’s the Balmain shoulders, ruched leggings, the crop top.   These items are usually shown on the runway as the “new it item” and then adapted by the fast fashion chains like Dottie, Forever 21 and H&M within a week of their debut.  These items are often stylish for a few seasons and then drop off the radar.

A stylish person may incorporate a new fashionable item into their wardrobe if it fits in with their lifestyle.  I find the mistake most ‘fashionable’ people make is with wearing too many of the seasons trends all at once and making themselves look more like fashion victims than fashionably stylish.

This explanation can also explain why certain items will cost more.  If you buy a Chanel handbag for $2000 and then wear it every day for just one year, the cost per wear is roughly only $5.50 per day.   And since that bag will be timeless you will be able to wear for years and years, which brings the cost per use down even lower.

You can buy a knock off any fashion item at a fraction of the cost because it will only be around for a few seasons so why spend a lot of money on it.  There are the select few that will buy the original fashion item but they are usually celebrities that can afford to discard the expensive items and buy the new “it” item every season.

Another observation I’ve made regarding the Style vs Fashion discussion is that a Stylish person seems to stay stylish whereas Fashionable people come and go with the trends.  Yes Rhianna is very fashionable at the moment but without her amazing Stylist and tremendous budget she would soon fade away.

What are your thoughts, would you rather be Stylish or Fashionable?

Properly Doing Posen

Last night the lovely Markus Van Driel took me as his handbag to the DLM Photographic exhibition at the Ivy. It was a very snazzy affair and I wanted to do it justice by wearing a proper cocktail ensemble.
The last time I wore this dress was to the FLS First Birthday High Tea and a few things went wrong. It was too cold so I had to wear a coat and pantyhose, and the shoes I chose were too chunky for the dress. This time I wanted to do Mr Posen properly so I paired the dress with simple accessories, actually no accessories except earrings and a clutch purse.
I love this dress, it is so classic. I feel like Audrey Hepburn without the big glasses and hat.

Boy Shoes and Weekend Party Outfits

How utterly fabulous is this photos display but Net-a-porter.com.
I thought I would include with this post some random photos that the Lovely Charmaine took of me this weekend. My flatmate and I combined our birthdays with Halloween and had a fantastic little house party.
As usual I dressed up. Thankfully most everyone else did too. It was a great night. Everyone we invited bar one person showed up and it was a great crowd.

Birthday Celebrations

Today was my birthday and I had a wonderful day out with my bestie. He took me to a fancy schmancy lunch in town and I wanted to dress up. I thought about being age appropriate but couldn’t figure out what that was so I just decided to do what I always do and dress however I feel. Today I took inspiration (again) from Ms Diabolina. This photo appeared in her post.

And I thought to myself “this is a look I can do.” So I threw on my Alice McCall dress, my leather moto jacket and my new Alexander Wang copies by Tony Bianco and made my way out the door. Love Ms Diabolina – she is my fashion Shero.

Bridget Mac’s Exhibition Opening & the Tale of a Francis Dress

On Friday I had the extreme pleasure of attending with my Fashion Mentor an artistic photographic exhibition by Bridget Mac. It was an installation exhibition at the Oxford Art Factory and it was AMAZING. I loved the piece in the invite below. Fantastic.

About a month ago, the fabulous Wendy Brandes started a blog for Designer Christian Francis Roth –

. After reading the blog I fell in love with the Francis V-Neck Star Dress and purchased it during a blogger special. Then Ms Wendy B blogged about his sample sale and on the invite was the most perfect Lenya dress I could ever imagine. I had to have it. And of course there was no better event than this to debut it. Behold my Francis one shoulder zig zag dress.

Pastel Nail Polish

Per The Cut :

When Chanel’s models paraded down the fall 2009 runway with minty green fingernails, people started buzzing about the color. A bright shade for fall? How revolutionary. Luckily, you don’t have to wait for September to get your hands on chalky pastel polishes: They’ve already started hitting shelves. And our favorite is Essie’s Sag Harbor shade. It’s less of an Easter egg pastel and more rich, eye-catching, and not so juvenile. As a co-worker said, “it’s the most beautiful French blue” and a friend added, “Girrrrl, I’ve never seen anything like that before!” Four more compliments at work and another from a random woman at a bar on Saturday night means that we’re in no rush to change out the color.

Dressing up for a night out

I was invited to the Australian Photographer of the Year Awards and the BF and I decided to go. I usually don’t stress about things like this cause I love an excuse to dress up but tonight I just couldn’t get my fashion mojo to work. This resulted in me asking my boy to decide between three choices. Now this could have been a disaster as the boy wears only black, all the time with no variations. He is gorgeous but not the most creative dresser. Though in the end I think he made the right choice, we were photographed at the event and I was told by one of the organisers that I looked amazing. Not bad for no mojo.

Jeans and juxtaposition

Today’s dressing adventure is all about these new jeans. I haven’t bought or worn a pair of jeans in ages, and I mean ages. I went to a random warehouse sale and I was able to get these fab True Religion jeans for a song. I paired the jeans with my vintage studded belt and Siren studded shoes, I’m loving the rock chick look at the moment.

The next item of focus is this fab jacket. I didn’t see if for ages sitting on the rack at Uturn and then one day last week while a customer was rifling through the shirts she came across this jacket and said to me, “isn’t this divine, too bad I don’t have the balls to pull it off”. Well, I have the balls and hopefully I’m pulling it off cause I LOVE this piece. I quickly took if off the rack and purchased it tres rapide.

I hope this combo of studs and lace works. Well it doesn’t really matter what anyone else thinks, cause I really love it.
