Sydney has been having a lot of rain of late and I’ve noticed many Sydney Siders are totally unprepared for the weather. This in itself boggles the mind because Sydney has an intense rain season but I digress. In an effort to assist these poor girls I have come up with a list of the must haves for all women to survive when they are hit with flood inducing rain.
First up – A proper umbrella or brolly for the Aussies.
I’m not talking about the cheap ones you buy on the street for $5 but a good sturdy one, preferably with a plastic frame. They have more sway than the metal ones and are less apt to break in the wind. Travel stores are usually great places to find good ones that are small enough to fit in a handbag. You will spend a bit more ($20 – $50) but you will have the umbrella for years instead of days. Try Magellan’s online for a good deal.
Second – A Raincoat or Trench.
The Trench has been a must have now for a number of years. You can buy one at almost every price point. My suggestion if you want a good one that will take you from Autumn to Spring is one with a removable lining. My London Fog trench is 11 years old and looks nearly as good today as it did when I first bought it. It has a removable wool lining that is so cozy that I can wear with just a sweater in winter in New York and be toasty warm.
Third (and most importantly) – Rain or Gumboots.
Gumboots made their huge comeback last year and now everyone from Jimmy Choo to Target have designed a pair. I have never been a fan of wearing your heels on your daily commute. You ruin your heels and we all know how expensive it can be getting your heels redone. A good pair of rain/gumboots are like gold dust. You will get so much wear from them and they look so fashionable at all the outdoor music festivals.
